今週の英語学習では不明点が多かった。
このブログでは、時制の文法事項に関する問題を2つ、考察する。
The mean-looking dog was staring at my fifty-dollar beefsteak and (would devour it / had just devoured it / was about to devour it / went to devour it / will devour it）.
適切なものを選ぶ問題。
どれだかわかりますか？

正解は、was about devour it 。
went to devour itと悩んだが、この場合、中心は50ドルのビーフステーキなので、came to devour itとする必要がある。
goとcomeの意味の違いもわかっていないと正解できない難問。
When we arose the next morning, we discovered that the river rose another foot during the night, making the crossing impossible.
間違いを訂正する問題。
答えはthe river had risenとする必要がある。
これは単純な時制の問題だからいいとして、
最後のmaking the ~の部分がわからない。
分詞構文なのか？
